Cartoonist Jackie Ormes, the leading inspiration for the Ormes Society, is perhaps best known for her creation of the strong-willed spitfire Torchy Brown. We here at the Ormes Society feel that such a legendary character as Torchy Brown should not remain lost in time! The Holding A Torch section of this site is dedicated to displaying renditions of Torchy Brown illustrated by various artists in the world of comics. Are you holding a torch for the resilient, righteous, smart and sensual Torchy Brown? Let us know!

I’ve been wanting to do a modern rendition of Torchy for a while now. Can anyone tell me what type of occupation the character had?
Comment by Kris Mosby February 20, 2007 @ 10:06 pmI believe Torchy Brown was a nurse and activist…and an all-around wonder!
Comment by Cheryl Lynn February 21, 2007 @ 10:09 amI had never even heard of Torchy Brown until I came across a special of NickNews just the other day, but I must say that I’m glad I’ve had a chance to come across it. I’m a young black woman who loves to draw and loves reading the sunday comics. I think it’s really cool that Mrs. Jackie Ormes had the courage to create something different from what people were used to that still lives on today.
